During her weekly press conference on Thursday, House Spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) stood by Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and said he could continue to serve in Congress despite his previous ties to a suspected Chinese man.
“I’m not worried about Mr. Swalwell,” Pelosi said, according to Fox News.
She kept firing on House minority leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who has publicly called for responses on whether Pelosi knew China was trying to infiltrate Swalwell’s office when she called him to the House Intelligence Committee in January of 2015 .
Pelosi claimed today that leaders of both Republican and Democratic parties were briefed “at the same time” in the spring of 2015 of an alleged Chinese spy targeting members of Congress.
“With regard to Mr. Swalwell – in the spring of 2015 the management of the house and the [Intelligence] The committee was informed that overtures were made to members of Congress by a Chinese person, ”she said. “When that was made known to the members of Congress, it was over.”
“I find it unfortunate that Mr. McCarthy is trying to create a problem with this when we all found out about it at the same time,” added Pelosi.
She then accused McCarthy of trying to divert attention from the fact that he has QAnon on his delegation there. “
“I think there is a danger to our debate here about the possibility of undue influence on members of Congress,” said Pelosi

Later in the press conference, Pelosi was asked if background checks are required for all staff and interns as the alleged spy has at least one intern in Swalwell’s office.
“I don’t know that it means we have background checks for every intern who comes to the Capitol,” Pelosi replied.
That came a day after Pelosi’s spokesman Drew Hammill said she was confident he could stay on the Intelligence Committee, which has access to classified information.
“The speaker has every confidence in Congressman Swalwell’s service in Congress and on the Intelligence Committee,” Hamill said.
